Higgins boat in action - 33KB

Higgins boat heading for the beach

0630 Omaha Beach, Normandy France 6 June 2004 -

The sound of the ocean’s tide is heard crashing on the open beachhead.  I feel the cool early morning breeze blowing steadily against the back of my neck.  A cold chill runs down my spine.

My thoughts reflect back 60 years prior, June 6, 1944.  A sense of what happened on the ground I was standing became overwhelming.  I was overcome with emotion.

The first wave of soldiers from Able Company, 116th Infantry, 29th Division, were approaching the shoreline already under heavy German artillery fire.

At exactly 6:36 A.M. ramps are dropped along the boat line and the men jump off in water anywhere from waist deep to higher than a man's head.  The rest is history.

The ramp doors opening on Omaha Beach that morning have always intrigued me. I think to myself what it must have been like for the men on those LCVP “Higgins Boats” moments before the Coxswain opened the ramp doors.

Every morning when I go outside to display my red, white, and blue American flag a sense of pride comes over me as I remember those men of the second World War who paid the ultimate price.  Because of their sacrifice I enjoy my freedom today, a freedom unfortunately too many of us take for granted.

D-Day was a pivotal point in our world’s history.  Our allied victory over fascism must never be forgotten.  We owe a great debt to those brave men who died that day on the beaches of Normandy, to live our lives the best we can and to uphold the values and virtues of the American way of life.

“Lest They Be Forgotten” is an unforgettable historic documentary series paying tribute to the unsung heroes of World War II, Korea, & Vietnam.

The documentaries feature poignant interviews with aging World War II Veterans, Korean and Vietnam Veternas.  It will retrace their steps from the ship to the shore.  It will tell of the landings on Omaha Beach on D Day and what they remember about the infamous LCVP “Higgins Boats.”  Learn about Iwo Jima, Korea, and Vietnam.
